Role Description

The Organisation

NEAS Australia is a long-established not-for-profit membership association providing quality assurance services in the English language teaching sector. An industry leader, NEAS operates in Australia and abroad, servicing a diverse membership base from universities to TAFE and vocational training, cross-sector and stand-alone training businesses.

In addition to quality assurance services, NEAS serves as a thought leader to the sector, providing online and face-to-face professional development, events and programs to managers and teachers. Its annual conference attracts members, non-members and sponsors from various supporting industries, including language proficiency testing, employment agencies, teacher training, and ed-tech.

Looked upon with much respect, NEAS takes pride in quality, integrity, innovation, community and in the act of giving. Operating as a not-for-profit organisation, NEAS promotes, projects and instils confidence and trust through its independent board, advisory council and staff team.

The Role

The non-executive NEAS is a paid position and leads a professional board that provides close, attentive oversight and review of strategy, risk and compliance. The role will become vacant at the next NEAS annual general meeting in November, and NEAS is accepting applications.

The successful candidate will be appointed initially as a director on a board which includes both appointed independent and member-elected directors. The Chair is appointed by the board from the pool of independent directors. The Chair will work in close contact with an established CEO who is midway through implementation of an existing strategic plan. It is expected that the Chair will support a program that includes critical government stakeholder management objectives.

All directors are required to prepare for and attend 6 or 7 meetings per year, each of 2 to 4 hours duration.

The NEAS Australia annual conference is held over 2 days in May in an Australian capital, and directors are expected to attend with the Chair officiating.

Selection Criteria

The role requires a person with the following attributes: •

  • Time and energy to commit actively
  • Familiarity and experience with board governance, ideally with AICD or equivalent qualifications
  • Knowledge of the international education sector (especially in the ASEAN region) with stakeholder management skills that reach into relevant senior levels of government
  • Experience in oversight of change management and innovation initiatives
  • Commercial leadership experience with strong knowledge of strategy, risk, finance and compliance
