Role Description

The Organisation

Established in 1986, PEER is one of South Australia’s leading Group Training Organisations (GTOs) and a respected Registered Training Organisation (RTO). They are dedicated to supporting the building, construction, renewable energy, and defence sectors through the training and employment of apprentices and trainees.

PEER employs over 500 apprentices and trainees, providing them with nationally accredited training and valuable hands-on experience through their extensive network of host employers. The RTO delivers high-quality education to more than 2,000 learners annually, with an outstanding 92% completion rate. They are committed to inclusive and flexible training and employment pathways and champion diversity within the industries they serve.

The Role

As part of the ongoing Board renewal process, PEER is seeking to appoint one new Independent Board Director to support the organisation’s strategic direction and continued growth. An Independent Director must have no affiliation with any PEER host employers or allied employer associations.

The Board has responsibility for:

  • Strategy: Working with the CEO and Executive to develop long-term goals and KPI’s.
  • Accountability: Ensuring PEER meets obligations, manages its finances, and operates transparently.
  • Resourcing: Securing funding and other resources to enable PEER to achieve its Vision and Mission.
  • Advocacy: Representing PEER to business, government, and the broader community and to stakeholders (with executives and other staff).
  • Monitoring: Ensuring PEER is run as required under its governing documents and the law.
  • Reviewing: Regularly reviewing the board structure and composition, so that these are best aligned for the organisation.

The PEER Board meets six times per year, typically from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm every second month.

Appointment term is subject to the PEER constitution but would typically be 2 years. Directors have the option to renominate at this time.

Directors are expected to:

  • Attend scheduled Board meetings.
  • Participate in sub-committees or strategic planning sessions where applicable.
  • Represent PEER at selected stakeholder, industry, or community events.
  • This is a non-executive role. Directors play a crucial part in guiding PEER’s strategy, governance, and community impact.

Selection Criteria

PEER is actively seeking applicants who bring diverse experiences and perspectives to the Board, with a focus on increasing female representation.

Ideal candidates will demonstrate:

  • A genuine commitment to vocational education, apprenticeships, and workforce development.
  • Executive or business leadership experience, preferably within aligned industry sectors (for example, construction, defence, education, renewables).
  • Governance experience or Board qualifications (AICD preferred but not essential).
  • Expertise in finance, legal, risk, audit, education, government relations, stakeholder engagement, or innovation.
  • Strategic thinking, collaborative leadership, and a values-driven approach.

Further Information can be found in the Board Director Information Pack.
