Damon Thomas
GOVERNANCE SPECIALIST
My background is significant across the public and private sector and can be characterised as high-level governance, succinct strategic planning, common sense solution provider and empowering outcomes through communication and networking. I have high competency in the areas of Management, Law, commerce and business, corporate government and adult, community, and further education both in a theoretical and practical sense. Above all I am regarded as a practical, outcomes and people focused professional.
I have extensive legal qualifications (BA LLB LLM Dip AICD FAIM) and a distinguished background in corporate practice, government legal service and administrative law. This combined with a natural understanding of the very nuances of the law including the need to be conscious of the personal impact a strict interpretation of the law may involve.
I have held significant and senior public and private sector roles within Queensland, Victoria, and Tasmania. My understanding of governance originates from my master’s degree in law, the AICD diploma course, my fellow status of the Australian Institute of Management and my practical and ongoing work in corporate governance with bodies such as the Australian Retailers Association, headquartered in Melbourne.
I have a strong administrative law background and was the Tasmanian State Ombudsman and the inaugural Health Complaints Commissioner of Tasmania.
As an advisor to several Victorian based vocational education providers, I have a solid relationship with VET and have been endorsed by the Australian Privacy Commissioner to provide workshop seminars on the National Privacy law. I appreciate the importance of privacy protection by Australian businesses.
