Role Description

The Organisation

Aotearoa New Zealand generates tens of thousands of tonnes of e-waste every year. Most of it has nowhere safe or convenient to go. TechCollect NZ exists to change that.

They are the country’s only free nationwide e-waste collection and recycling scheme, funded by industry and free for consumers. Their members include Canon, Dell, HP, Logitech, Microsoft, and The Warehouse Group. They operate a national network of retail drop-off points, process through certified onshore recyclers, and have applied to the Government to become an accredited scheme under the Waste Minimisation Act 2008.

TechCollect NZ is at a turning point. They have applied to the Government to transition from a voluntary scheme to a nationally accredited product stewardship organisation. At the same time, they are in a growth phase, diversifying funding, expanding collection networks, and building relationships with councils, government, and new industry partners.

The Role

TechCollect NZ seeks an Independent Director who brings sector knowledge, governance experience, and the energy to help a small, purpose-driven organisation navigate its most important growth phase. This is a hands-on governance role where your contribution will be visible, and your networks will matter.

Location: National (Board meetings held remotely).
Remuneration: NZD $10,000 per annum.
Term: Three years, eligible for reappointment.
Minimum time commitment: Quarterly Board meetings (approximately 2 hours each) plus preparation time and occasional committee work.

Selection Criteria

Required

  • A strong governance background with experience serving on boards or governance bodies.
  • Institute of Directors membership is valued but not required.
  • Financial literacy, including the ability to read and interrogate financial reports, budgets, and cash flow forecasts.
  • Sound judgement, integrity, and the ability to act in the best interests of a not-for-profit, member-funded organisation.
  • Independence from TechCollect NZ’s members, recycling partners, and service providers (as required by our Membership Deed).

Highly Desirable

  • Knowledge of, and networks within, the waste, resource recovery, or environmental services sector in New Zealand.
  • Experience working with or within local government, particularly in waste minimisation, environmental regulation, or community services.
  • Familiarity with the circular economy, product stewardship, or extended producer responsibility frameworks.

Desirable

  • Experience in a startup, growth-phase, or scaling not-for-profit organisation.
  • Commercial or technology sector experience that could support OEM engagement and membership growth.
  • Understanding of the New Zealand regulatory environment, including the Waste Minimisation Act 2008 and the role of the Ministry for the Environment.
