Role Description
The Organisation
The Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI) is the Australian grape and wine industry’s own research organisation. It is a not-for-profit/for-purpose organisation that supports a sustainable and successful grape and wine industry through world-class research, practical solutions, and knowledge transfer.
The AWRI has strong links with the wine industry and research organisations globally, and operates a commercial arm, Affinity Labs, which delivers advanced analytical and consulting services to the food and beverage sector.
The Role
The AWRI is seeking to appoint a Non-Executive Director to its skills-based Board, with the capability to serve as Chair of the Audit Committee. This is a remunerated position offering an opportunity to contribute to the governance and strategic direction of a national research organisation.
Board Directors work collaboratively with the Chair, fellow Directors and Executive Management to ensure strong governance, financial oversight and strategic direction for the organisation. In addition to general Board responsibilities, the successful candidate will provide leadership of the Audit Committee and contribute to:
Oversight of financial performance and reporting
Audit, compliance and risk management frameworks
Governance and internal control systems
Engagement with management, auditors and key stakeholders
Supporting strategic decision-making and organisational performance
Time Commitment
The AWRI Board meets four times per year, including:
At least two meetings at the Waite Research Precinct in Adelaide
At least one meeting held online
Potentially one meeting held in a wine-growing region
The role requires additional time commitment for:
Audit Committee meetings
Engagement with executive management and stakeholders
Selection Criteria
Applications from people with any of the following additional experience will be particularly welcome:
A legal background
Experience with enterprise IT systems and/or; cyber security
Familiarity with AI and/or AgTech
Knowledge of Government-funded research and development environments
The successful candidates will have:
Strong governance and financial acumen
Experience in contributing at Board or executive level
The ability to influence, build consensus and provide wise counsel
A collaborative, strategic mindset with sound judgement
Formal governance qualifications (e.g. AICD) or participation in agricultural or industry leadership programs will be viewed favourably, but are not essential.
