Role Description

The Organisation

Lombardi Australia specialise in hydropower and underground works design. Technical expertise, innovation by practice, awareness of limits and cooperative attitude are the strategic core values that made them a “go-to” specialist consulting firm in the global hydropower, underground works, and engineering structures markets.

Leveraging their flat organisational structure allows quick decision-making and focuses on value creation rather than process. They offer value-for-money specialist consulting services.

Lombardi Australia has a track record as a contractor’s engineer, providing technical, innovative, pragmatic, and value-engineered solutions during the construction phase. The organisational culture and governance allow them to be agile and adaptive to technological advancements and ever-changing market conditions. They are adaptive in dealing with scope changes to deliver clients’ desired project outcomes as efficiently as possible.

The Role

Lombardi Engineering Australia is seeking to appoint an additional Non-Executive Board Member to strengthen the Board’s capability in Australian market development, strategic positioning and governance, as the business enters its next stage of growth and diversification.

The role is intended to add strong local market insight, commercial judgement and sector connectivity, while supporting the Board and CEO in guiding the company’s development across energy, water and selected infrastructure markets in Australia.

The new Board Member is expected to contribute in particular to:

  • strengthening LoAU’s market positioning in Australia
  • supporting structured acquisition and partnership development
  • providing strategic guidance on growth in energy, water and selected infrastructure sectors
  • contributing to Board discussions on risk, commercial priorities, resourcing and post-project transition planning
  • helping connect the company to relevant clients, partners and market opportunities where appropriate

Selection Criteria

Candidate Profile
The preferred candidate will be a senior Australian industry professional with more than 20 years of experience in one or more of the following sectors:

  • underground infrastructure and tunnelling
  • water, hydropower and dams
  • renewable energy and energy transition infrastructure

The candidate should combine deep sector understanding with proven business leadership experience and a strong active network across major market participants.

Required Experience and Capabilities
The candidate should have substantial proven senior-level experience in at least one, and ideally several, of the following areas:

  • underground infrastructure, including tunnels, rail, metro, road or major civil works
  • dams, hydropower, pumped hydro, water storage or dam safety/rehabilitation
  • renewable energy and related infrastructure, including storage, hydro, transmission interface or major energy projects

Business and Management Experience
The candidate should demonstrate:

  • significant experience in business management, including strategic planning, commercial oversight and organisational leadership
  • experience at executive, board or senior advisory level within engineering, consulting, contracting, asset owner or infrastructure delivery organisations
  • sound understanding of project risk, contract strategy, business development and governance in the Australian market
  • ability to support management on growth, market entry, partnerships and client positioning

Market network
A key requirement is an active and credible network across the Australian market, including several of the following:

  • EPC contractors and major constructors
  • public sector clients, government agencies and government-owned corporations
  • private developers, utilities, asset owners and investors
  • major engineering and consulting firms
  • relevant decision-makers and influencers in the target sectors

The Board is particularly interested in candidates who can contribute practical market access and relationship capital, rather than purely academic or compliance-based governance experience.

Personal Attributes
The successful candidate is expected to bring:

  • strong commercial judgement and strategic mindset
  • credibility and standing in the Australian infrastructure and/or energy market
  • independence of thought and constructive challenge
  • pragmatic, solution-oriented approach
  • high ethical standards and sound corporate governance judgment
  • ability to work effectively in an international group environment

Preferred additional strengths
It would be advantageous if the candidate also offers one or more of the following:

  • prior board or non-executive director experience
  • experience with major contractors active in Australia
  • exposure to PPP, EPC, D&C or alliance delivery models
  • familiarity with both public and private sector procurement environments
  • experience in scaling or repositioning engineering or consulting businesses
  • understanding of the Australian renewable energy transition and storage market, especially pumped hydro and related infrastructure
